SQL Versions and how are they Different

Microsoft SQL is one of the most popular relational databases in the world. This product comes in several different platforms.

  • On-Premise

  • Cloud

The On-Premise solution comes in 5 different versions while the Cloud product has 2 main versions.

On-Premise versions.

  • Enterprise - The premium offering, SQL Server Enterprise edition delivers comprehensive high-end datacenter capabilities focused on Large organizations that require all of the speed and high availability features of this version.

  • Standard - SQL Server Standard edition delivers basic data management and business intelligence database for departments and small organizations to run their applications

  • Web - SQL Server Web edition is a low total-cost-of-ownership option for Web hosters

  • Developer - SQL Server Developer edition lets developers build any kind of application on top of SQL Server. It includes all the functionality of Enterprise edition, but is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server.

  • Express - SQL Server Express edition is the entry-level, free database and is ideal for learning and building desktop and small server data-driven applications.

Cloud Versions

  • Azure SQL Databases - This platform allows you to create/import individual SQL databases either with specific performance resources per database or group of databases (elastic pool). However it does not provide a lot of higher level SQL Server administrative functions required by older applications.

  • Azure SQL Managed Instance - This product provides a higher level of Database management than Azure SQL databases allowing you to move legacy SQL databases to the cloud.
